One Way Travel
Heading overseas and don’t know when you’ll be back…if ever?
Travel looks different for everyone. Some people map out their holiday plans well in advance, while others simply book a one-way ticket and decide the rest as they go. For those who prefer the freedom of open-ended travel, one-way travel insurance is designed to provide flexible protection wherever the journey takes them.
One-way travel insurance allows Australians heading overseas without a confirmed return flight to arrange cover that matches their estimated travel dates. International Comprehensive Care and Essentials Care policies are available for Australian residents, who do not know when they will return to Australia or who want cover to end whilst they are still overseas. Even if you are relocating to a new country, provided you are a resident of Australia at the time you purchase cover for the start of your new adventure, or a return date for a trip or tour is undecided, you will still need to nominate an end date for the cover period. The total length of cover we can offer per policy, including any extensions is 365 days.
Can I extend my cover whilst I am away?
Our cover for one way journeys is especially useful for people who are not sure how long they will be away. If travel continues beyond the original policy dates, cover can usually be extended by contacting Easy Travel Insurance before your policy expires. Once the additional premium is paid, a new Certificate of Insurance is issued with updated travel dates. Renewing before expiry is important, as any lapse will result in a short waiting period during which cover does not apply. Choosing a longer policy duration before departure can help reduce the total cost of cover but may also help travellers with existing health conditions, as it reduces the risk of new exclusions being applied to conditions that arise while overseas.
What destinations should I include?
Destination cover needs careful thought as additional countries or regions cannot be added to your policy after purchase.
Selecting your destinations you need cover for can be straight forward if you know you are only heading to a specific country or countries. You can of course list all countries you plan to visit when purchasing your policy or if you are unsure of each country you may need cover for, you can use broader coverage areas such as ‘All of Europe’ or ‘All of Asia’. For those who are unsure of their itinerary, choosing ‘Worldwide’ as your destination, is often the safest approach and can often prove to be a cost effective option, as it provides flexibility to explore multiple destinations without the need to source additional cover for unexpected adventures. Our travel insurance policies do not include any sanctioned countries or “Do Not Travel” destinations listed by the Australian Government on the Smart Traveller website.
For one-way trips, it is also essential to consider visa requirements. Each country sets its own rules, and some destinations may have specific requirements for travellers without return tickets. Checking these conditions with the relevant government bodies before departure helps avoid complications along the way.
I’m planning to have fun, what activites should I include?
Activity cover is another consideration. Many one-way travellers make spontaneous decisions along the way — perhaps hiring a motorbike, taking a ski trip, or booking a cruise. These activities are not automatically included in a standard policy, so it is important to add them to ensure you’re protected. Some activities can be added while already travelling, but arranging them in advance is the safest approach, and leaves you free to explore and enjoy any opportunity whenever you like.
One-way travel represents freedom, spontaneity, and adventure — but it also carries risks. With the right cover in place, travellers can enjoy the excitement of an open-ended journey without worrying about what might go wrong. Easy Travel Insurance offers policies that are flexible, extendable, and designed with long-term travellers in mind. Whether you’re heading overseas for a few months or setting off on a journey with no fixed end date, one-way travel insurance gives you the protection and confidence to make the most of every experience.
